Health Care at Dalry
Over the course of my 20+ years of purebred dogs I have come to fear the very real possibility of long-term chronic
disease caused by vaccinations far more than the calculated risk of exposing my dogs to the real world. There are no
guarantees, no fool-proof safety nets, but I firmly believe that by feeding my dogs a carnivore-appropriate diet, not
vaccinating and using wormers only when fecal examinations indicate that I should, that I am giving my dogs their
best chance at having healthy immune systems that can deal with what life has to offer. An important part of health
at Dalry is the knowledge of what vaccination can and cannot do.
Tollers have been identified as being more sensitive to vaccines and many breeders do not recommend annual
vaccinations. I firmly believe that vaccines cause chronic disease and that administration of any vaccine should be
carefully weighed against the higher risk of long-term chronic disease caused by vaccination. Far too many dogs in all
breeds are dying at very young ages. I don't believe this is due to bad luck or bad genetics, although the
susceptibility to die young is possibly genetic, but that susceptibility only expresses itself with the right conditions or
triggers: bad diet, over-vaccination and poor environment.
When I started feeding a raw diet in 2000 I began to understand that a healthy dog is one whose immune system is
working at its peak and that vaccines don't make that happen. It was one of those "ah-ha" moments. I read
Catherine O'Driscoll's book "What Vets Don't Tell You About Vaccines" and became aware of both the long-term
chronic problems that vaccines cause and that the veterinary community doesn't tell you everything you need to
know. Change is slow but it is heartening to note that more and more veterinarians are agreeing that over-vaccination
is dangerous and a waste of time and money. http://www.angelfire.com/biz/froghollerfilas/VaccBlanco.html
Vaccination does not confer immunity, it merely gives the immune system something to "remember" by sensitizing the
body to produce antibodies. Vaccination is a very unnatural way for an immune system to be introduced to an
intruder. Normal exposure to a pathogen will not be via an intramuscular shot, it will be through the mucous
membranes (mouth and nose), the first line of defence! The key to dealing with disease is an immune system that
works at optimum capacity. A poorly functioning immune system will not work properly even if vaccinated. A well
functioning immune system creates antibodies to deal with antigens it is exposed to. Cells in the body produce the
antibodies toward an antigen and these cells can produce antibodies within forty-eight hours. When booster vaccines
are administered, antibodies destroy the vaccine particles before they can augment the immunity, and nothing is
accomplished. Immunologic memory lasts for years, usually for the life of the individual. A vaccination does not
guarantee that your dog will not contract parvovirus or any other virus, but the health of the immune system will
directly affect the outcome of an encounter with a virus or pathogen. The dog either has the capacity to develop an
immune response or it does not.
When administered, vaccines will shut the immune system down for a brief period of time after vaccination, leaving the
animal vulnerable and there is human research which proves that vaccination permanently alters the structure of DNA.
Most vaccines create a chronic form of the acute diseases, manifesting in epilepsy, allergies, bowel disorders,
behaviour issues and auto-immune disorders.
A study in the UK reported that 69.2% of allergic dogs became allergic within 3 months of vaccination. Of epileptic
dogs, 73.1% had their first seizure within 3 months of vaccination, 67% of behavioural problems manifested within 3
months of vaccination and that overall 66% of sick dogs became sick within 3 months of vaccination. This same study
also found that of dogs with hepatitis, 64% contracted it within three months of being vaccinated and, of those with
parainfluenza, 50% developed it within three months of their shots. Also, 69% of dogs with parvovirus, 56% of dogs
with distemper, and every single dog with leptospirosis in the survey contracted the diseases within three months of
vaccination.

With numbers like this I am no longer comfortable with most vaccines and certainly not with "boosters". I absolutely
will not sell a puppy to someone who does not understand the dangers of over-vaccination. Chronic disease has
become a way of life for far too many of our canine companions.
Many vaccinations are given with no thought as to actual exposure risk or risk of adverse reaction. Additionally many
dogs are vaccinated in conjunction with major surgery (spay/neuter) when the dog's immune system will be
compromised by the stress of surgery. As well, the vast majority of puppies are vaccinated for the first time when
maternal antibodies are still present. A vaccine that is administered while maternal antibodies are still present will be
rendered useless by those maternal antibodies. So, the veterinary community began administering vaccines at
bi-weekly intervals in order to provide "protection" when the maternal antibodies are gone. The danger of vaccinating
an immature immune system with dangerous pathogens must be obvious to anyone. Research has shown that in
95% of puppies maternal antibodies are gone by 12 or 13 weeks. So, it makes sense to vaccinate when it's certain
that maternal antibodies have gone. And if vaccination is to be undertaken, only single disease shots should be
administered, never combination vaccines.
Dalry puppies leave my premises with no vaccines and puppy buyers will be given full instructions on what vaccines
may be given and at what intervals. Any buyer that elects to not vaccinate at all is strongly encouraged in that
decision and will be provided with plenty of support and guidance.

"The only safe vaccine is a vaccine that is never
used" -- Dr. James A. Shannon, National
Institutes of Health
"Modern vaccinations, fear of germs and obsession with hygiene are depriving the immune system of
the information input upon which it is dependent. This fails to maintain the correct cytokine balance
and fine-tune T-cell regulation, and may lead to increased incidences of allergies and autoimmune
diseases. If humans continue to deprive their immune systems of the input to which evolution has
adapted it, it may be necessary to devise ways of replacing it artificially." --Rook GA, Stanford JL
